A Prayer in Times of Disaster

Lord, comfort those who grieve this day
in LA and DC
who (numbed by sorrow)
find it hard to feel.
Sustain the victims of despair
with undergirding grace
as they accept their plight and start to heal.

May we who have a role to play
in minimizing pain
resolve to render aid with open hearts.
Unite us in a common cause
in spite of what divides.
Help us discern and do what is our part. Amen.

Facing Our Personal Sinai

There are mountains we are called to climb

There is a mountain we must climb
just like old Moses did:
meeting deadlines, greeting clients,
taking care of kids.

Nursing needs of aging parents,
battling the blues,
facing fears when cancer flaunts
a short and shrinking fuse.

Finding funds to meet the mortgage,
visiting a grave,
taking stock for starting over
while trying to be brave.

Our current Sinai looms quite large.
It beckons every day.
But climbing with companions close
will help us on the way.

An Inaugural Prayer

Donald J. Trump is sworn in as the 47th President of the United States

God, bless our President (and those elected)
who seek to lead one nation under You.
Give them the grace to lead while serving others
denying self in everything they do.
Grant them the courage to stand up to terror
protecting both the masses and the few.

God, bless our President and bless his family
who recognize the spotlight they now face.
Grant them protection from those who oppose them.
Help them to learn from last year’s grueling race.
Give them the will to model godly standards
and help them trust in Your amazing grace.

God, bless our President with needed wisdom
as he considers options far and near.
Infuse him with uncanny comprehension
that he might calm us from the things we fear.
Give him the confidence to pray believing
that when he seeks Your face You always hear. Amen.

A Heartfelt Call for Action

The Los Angeles fires have blazed a path in our hearts

The City of Angels is
dodging Hell’s flames.
This inferno has singed
fleeing wings.
Angelinos are weary
of winds from the east
and the smoke that makes
weeping eyes sting.

In the crises of others,
in the losses they face,
we are given a chance to respond
to the pain and the heartache,
to the grief and despair
and the loss of rare treasures now gone.

Midst the ash and the embers,
So Cal looks for help
from its neighboring states far and wide.
Are you willing to give?
Are you willing to serve?
Let the love in your heart be your guide.

The Wisemen’s Wives

Have you ever considered who the wisemen left behind?

There were three mates
who stayed behind
to run the home
the kids to mind
while Baltashazar, Melchior
and Caspar headed west.

The wisemen’s wives
were smart as well.
Their men away,
they’d buy and sell.
For months on end
they ruled like queens
because their kings were gone.

They had no clue
what their men found
in Bethlehem
on holy ground.
God-with-us was now with them
who worshipped Him with gifts.

And when they made
their way back home,
the magi met their wives alone
and shared with them
a mystery…
how God became a man.
