A New Year’s Prayer

It’s a new year and a new opportunity to trust God

While resolutions weary me
I still have one resolve.
To live each day for You alone
as weeks and months evolve.

The challenges this year will bring
will drop me to my knees.
And so I’m asking You, dear Lord,
to give me wisdom. Please!

Direct my steps along a path
that isn’t always clear.
And when I’m forced to make a choice,
don’t let me cave to fear.

I hope this year will prove my trust
in what You’ve planned for me.
So give me grace, dear loving God,
to live expectantly.

A New Year’s Bridge

The wooden covered bridge in Luzern Switzerland

A new year is a bridge to spring
where icefloes melt and robins sing.
It is what links darkness to light
and makes God’s presence known.

A new year is a bridge to hope
providing us the means to cope
when life is drab and days are short
and challenges abound.

A new year is a bridge to peace
that models how our conflicts cease
when we admit our neediness
and trust another’s gift.

A new year is a bridge to love
as we take note of One above
who left His home to come to earth
to give us what we lacked.

Faith Matters in 2025

A painting of Snoqualmie Falls in Washington State by J. Craig Thorpe

Your faith serves as a rubber boat
when raging currents take your hope
and send you down a one-way spill
from which there’s no return.

It’s true! Faith matters most of all
when life is like a waterfall
when you can’t tell just where or when
the splashdown will occur.

Life carries you with no holds barred.
And without drag, the drop is hard.
You hang on tight while trusting God
It’s faith that gives you hope.

So, as this new year beckons us
to ride the waves with hope and trust,
we recognize how much faith means
to navigate what’s next.

Looking Back/Looking Forward

Contemplations as a new year begins

An old year ends. A new year starts.
Time marches on. And yet
we can’t help pondering the past
and choices we regret.

We grieve the times we failed to love
the way that Jesus would.
We rue the chances that we had
to do the things we should.

A listening ear. A warm embrace.
A word that shows we care.
These simple acts that have no cost
are priceless cause they’re rare.

Sadly the past cannot be changed.
We can’t undo what’s done.
We can, however, start anew.
A new year has begun!

One for the Books!

The past year is bound to be remembered

Another year’s been published.
It was one for the books.
It’s bound to be remembered,
so let’s take one last look
at pages filled with busyness
and paragraphs of fear.
There’re endnotes of a loved one’s death
and footnotes of good cheer.

Some chapters point to answered prayer
while others reveal stress.
No fiction, here. Your story boasts
the facts and nothing less.

But all that’s ancient history, now.
What’s past is in the past.
It’s time to write a sequel
filled with mem’ries that will last.

Your yellow pad is a blank slate
just like the days ahead.
So, trusting in a faithful God,
write-on with ink or lead.
