O Say Can’t You Stand?

Questioning Colin Kaepernick’s refusal to stand for the national anthem

O say can’t you stand
when our flag is unfurled
though our nation is fraught
with both bias and hatred?
Don’t you owe some respect
though you have some regrets
for the rights you enjoy
and the blessings you cherish?

Colin, aren’t you aware
disrespect breeds despair
and the choices you make
may soon come back to haunt you?
O say does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave
o’er the land of the free
and the home of the brave!

The Republican Party is Anything But

It’s more like a funeral wake

The Party of Abe Lincoln
has become a funeral wake.
The only punch that’s served are verbal jabs.
Trump and Cruz just keep on swinging
like two bullies at recess
while the right to lead our nation’s up for grabs.

The campaign trail is littered
with what stinks and often steams.
Every week there’s more to hate and less to love.
No one’s acting presidential.
Late night talk shows think it’s bliss
as they joke about what we’re all thinking of.

Honest Abe just can’t believe it.
He is turning in his grave.
Truth and decency has joined him six feet down.
The Democrats are giddy.
They smell vic’try in the air.
A GOP contender can’t be found.

Good Lord, He’s a Bad Candidate

Why I hope Donald Trump is not the GOP’s nominee

I pledge allegiance to a flag,
not to an arrogant wind bag.
When Trump insists I raise my hand,
my blood begins to boil.

If Trump’s elected we would see
he’d call it Washington, DT.
The White House would be spray-tanned orange
and called Trump Tower South.

In real estate he may be great.
His wine’s okay.
So, too, his steak.
But Donald Trump as President?
Good Lord, that would be bad!

Why Donald Trump Troubles Me

One poetical commentator’s opinion

The Donald acts more like
“the don” of a clan
than one we should trust
with the keys to our land.

He’s flippant, demeaning,
disgusting and rude,
unfeeling, judgmental,
capricious and crude.

His words trump his smile,
his actions his wealth.
While some sing his praises,
I scoff at his stealth.

The world must be laughing
to see us misled.
Enough of this folly
we’ve all come to dread.

Enough is Enough!

A poetic plea for election reform

In Iowa the candidates
are clocking countless miles
in hopes come caucus night they will have won.
The Hawkeye State is first in line
while others wait their turn
until this long election year is done.

We’re weary of this war of words
reported in the news.
The sound bytes from each camp are deafening.
The money spent’s ungodly
and it’s such a waste of time
while our trust in who is running’s lessening.

Why can’t we learn from Canada?
Six weeks is what’s allowed
for those who want to win to plead their case.
A 10k run is long enough.
Who needs a marathon?
And yet that’s what we have… a two year race!
