He’s Not a Sheep-Clad Wolf

Barack Obama is a Christ-follower

Obama’s not bin Laden,
a Muslim or a spy.
Barack professes Christian faith
although his critics try

to make folks think he’s just a wolf
who wears lambskin and wool.
But check the facts. It’s all a lie.
His slanderers are fools.

And though I’m a Republican
and resonate with Mike,
Obama gives me cause for pause.
There’s something that I like.

Not so with screechy Hillary.
I just can’t stand her voice.
So if you are a Democrat,
I’m glad you have a choice.

Remembering a King and a President

This week we honored Martin King
recalling how he served
the poor, deprived and dispossessed
denied what they deserved.
We’re grateful, Lord, for patriots
who stand for what You will,
who dare to do whate’er it takes
to conquer culture’s ills.

And, Lord, we’re mindful of the fact
we’ve still a ways to go.
In forty years since Martin’s death,
our progress has been slow.
Please guide us, God, and bless our land
in spite of all its flaws.
Please lead our sitting President
and those who make our laws.

(the above can be sung to the tune of America the Beautiful)

Life is Precious

A poem for Sanctity of Life Sunday;
Respecting the Mystery of Life

Life is precious, sacred, blest
from the womb to final rest.
God is in a child’s first breath
or a grandpa facing death.

Special needs autistic son.
Crippled daughter who can’t run.
Those impaired in speech or sight.
Those whose hearing isn’t right.

Those who can’t recall their name.
Those with damage to their brain.
Those in prison, addicts too.
Those who think their options few.

Each life matters. Each has worth.
Everyone on “God’s green earth.” *
Life is precious, sacred, blest
from the womb to final rest

*With gratitude to my friend Michael Medved for use of his trademark phrase that calls to mind the beautiful planet our loving Creator has allowed us to inhabit

Respecting the Mystery of Life
Why human cloning is wrong.

Another claim of cloning life?
It’s kindling for real moral strife.
Unethical is what it is.
Pretending we are God.

Who has the right to engineer
the mystery we all hold dear?
Are embryos a jigsaw piece
we play with ’til they fit?

Who cares if stem cells are procured
if lines of ethics are then blurred?
The ends don’t justify the means
where cloning is concerned.

A Day Fit for a King?

Asking hard questions on MLK’s birthday

A day fit for a King
is crowned by questions
that don’t fit the prestigious nature
of our political process.
Isn’t it?

What do you think?

Will Martin’s dream
become Hillary’s nightmare?

Will a fairytale assertion by Bill
result in a storybook ending for Barack?

Will the 79th anniversary
of Dr. King’s birth
prove our society is still as sick
as it was in the Sixties?

Will this campaign
become a race riddled by
racial insinuations?

Will the content of its character
be colored by mudslinging
and dirty tricks.

Wouldn’t a great birthday gift
for the good doctor
be an agreement by those running
to start walking in a manner
that honors his memory?

Well, wouldn’t it?

The Perfect Patriots?

Think again!

The Brady Bunch known as the Pats
has been impressive. Note their stats.
The GQ QB and his team
collected 16 wins.

Perfection? Well, that’s not quite true.
Tom Brady’s morals are askew.
He isn’t what you’d want your son
to grow up being like.

His girlfriend had a baby boy.
Was Bridget but Tom’s bedtime toy?
He ditched her for another dame
before his child was born.

And Belichick’s been known to cheat.
He broke the rules so he could beat
the other teams he must upend
to reach the Super Bowl.

And though the coach has paid a fine,
a shadow on the scrimmage line
can’t be dispelled. Trust has been benched.
Integrity has too.

Perfection? No, it isn’t so.
New England has a ways to go.
To win at football means far less
than doing what is right. But lest we be too quick to chide,we’d best examine what we hide. The innocence of which we boastis less than we profess.
That’s why we had a Christmastime. The verses of our lives don’t rhyme.God knew we’d never reach our goal. That’s why He sent us Christ.

A Horse Race Without Equal

The candidates continue to jockey for position

As they jockey for position
with the finish months away,
Hillary and all her rivals
hold the reins.
It’s a horse race without equal.
First-time riders and old jocks
and a muddy track where what’s slung
thwarts their aim.

It’s a derby for Kentucky
and the other forty-nine
handicapped by key endorsements
in the stands.
There are wagers on the outcome.
But unlike the Preakness Stakes,
those who ride don’t make the difference.
It’s the fans.

So it’s up to us to track with
those who love to dig up dirt
while they’re racing for the White House
on their steeds.
We must study what they stand for.
We must watch them all debate.
After all, we will determine
who succeeds.
